Growth Hormone Axis

Sermorelin — the original GHRH analogue.

Sermorelin is a GHRH analogue corresponding to the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone — the shortest fully functional fragment. It stimulates the pituitary to produce and release its own growth hormone.

Last reviewed:

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is GHRH(1-29), the biologically active fragment of growth hormone-releasing hormone. Because it works upstream — stimulating the pituitary rather than supplying GH directly — the body retains its natural feedback loop, which proponents argue is a more physiological approach than exogenous HGH. It was historically FDA-approved (as Geref) for diagnostic use before being discontinued for commercial reasons.

What does the research show?

EVIDENCE SUMMARY
STRONG
GH/IGF-1 elevation — Well-established stimulation of pituitary GH release and downstream IGF-1. Historically used as a diagnostic agent for GH deficiency.
MODERATE
Body composition (with stacking) — Often combined with a GHRP like Ipamorelin. Some data on improved body composition and sleep quality.
LIMITED
Anti-aging claims — Short half-life limits sustained effect. Longevity claims are largely extrapolated from GH/IGF-1 elevation.
Sermorelin has a very short half-life (~minutes). Research use only; not currently an approved pharmaceutical in the EU. This is a research compound, not a medication.

What to look for when buying in Europe

Sermorelin is most-researched stacked with Ipamorelin. Fewer EU vendors carry it than newer GHRH analogues like CJC-1295. Require ≥98% HPLC purity and cold-chain-aware shipping.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is GHRH(1-29), the biologically active fragment of growth hormone-releasing hormone. It stimulates the pituitary to release GH rather than supplying GH directly, so the body retains its natural feedback loop.

How is Sermorelin different from HGH?

It works upstream by stimulating the pituitary, which proponents argue is more physiological than exogenous HGH because natural feedback regulation is preserved.

What does the research show?

There is strong evidence for GH and IGF-1 elevation, historically used as a diagnostic agent for GH deficiency, moderate evidence for body-composition effects when stacked with a GHRP like ipamorelin, and limited support for anti-aging claims.

Why is Sermorelin often combined with a GHRP?

Its very short half-life of a few minutes limits sustained effect, so it is often combined with a GHRP like ipamorelin, with some data on improved body composition and sleep quality.

Is Sermorelin legal in the EU?

It was historically FDA-approved (as Geref) for diagnostic use before commercial discontinuation. In the EU it is sold as a research compound for laboratory use only.

Is Sermorelin banned in sport?

Yes. It appears on the WADA prohibited list (S2).
