Autophagy — Inducers
Autophagy is the cell's recycling system for damaged proteins and organelles. Declining autophagy is linked to aging in research. This topic covers compounds and conditions studied as autophagy inducers.
Compounds and conditions studied
Spermidine. A polyamine found in wheat germ, aged cheese and soy. Observational and small human studies have looked at cardiovascular and cognitive markers; evidence is still limited.
Rapamycin. Inhibits mTOR, a central brake on autophagy, and is the most potent pharmacological autophagy inducer known. It is a prescription immunosuppressant; its use in aging research is experimental.
Berberine. A plant alkaloid that activates AMPK, which is linked to autophagy. It has been studied for metabolic health and can interact with medicines.
Fasting. Nutrient deprivation induces autophagy in animal models. In humans, autophagy is hard to measure, and how much fasting affects it is still uncertain.
