What is ATP?
ATP is a nucleotide built from adenine, ribose and three phosphate groups. It is the universal energy carrier in living cells: hydrolysis of the terminal phosphate bond releases the energy that drives nearly every cellular process, from muscle contraction to active membrane transport. Unlike most substances in this database, ATP is not a peptide but a nucleotide, and it occurs naturally in every cell.
What does the research show?
ATP’s role in cellular metabolism is extensively documented. Less clear is what oral or parenteral administration of free ATP actually achieves: extracellular ATP is very rapidly broken down by ecto-nucleotidases, and how much orally administered ATP reaches the bloodstream intact is debated. A small number of studies on oral ATP in athletes report modest effects on muscle strength and recovery; the evidence base is limited and not consistently replicated.
